Former Leaders of Philadelphia Local Charged with Theft

On September 26, Lawrence Marable and Deborah Powell, respectively, the former president and treasurer of Local 1793 of the American Federation of Government Employees, were each charged in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania with five counts of property theft, one count of making false record entries, and one count of conspiracy to steal $187,000 worth of property.  The local represents employees at the VA Hospital in Philadelphia located at University and Woodland Avenues.  The charges follow a joint investigation by the Labor Department’s Office of Labor-Management Standards (OLMS) and the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Office of Inspector General.  (OLMS, 10/9/06). 

 

D.C. Local Ex-President Sentenced for Embezzlement

On September 26, Mary Garner, formerly president of AFGE Local 3653, was sentenced in federal court for the District of Columbia to five years probation, six months of which must be served in home detention, and 360 hours of community service for embezzling $12,194 from her union.  She also will have to make nearly $12,000 in restitution payments.  Garner pleaded guilty in June.  (OLMS, 10/9/06).     

 

Las Vegas Local Bookkeeper Pleads Guilty to Embezzlement

On September 29, Joy Andrews, former bookkeeper for United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners Local 1780, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court for the District of Nevada to one count of embezzlement of $55,765 in union funds.  The guilty plea follows an investigation by the Labor Department’s Office of Labor-Management Standards and Office of Inspector General.  (OLMS, 10/9/06).

 

Former Secretary-Treasurer in New York Sentenced for Thefts

On September 26, Dianne Sampson, former secretary-treasurer of the Fraternal Order of Police, DC Lodge No. 1, FPS Labor Committee, was sentenced in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York to three years probation and ordered to make restitution to her union in the amount of $23,000.  She pleaded guilty this past May.  Her union represents employees of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.  (OLMS, 10/9/06).

 

Financial Secretary in Michigan Pleads Guilty to Embezzlement

On September 13, Michael Winchester, ex-financial secretary for Local 651 of the United Auto Workers, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan to embezzling $20,401.46.  The union represents about 4,800 workers at Delphi and Delco electronics assembly plants in Flint.  (OLMS, 10/9/06). 

 

Pennsylvania Bookkeeper Indicted for Embezzlement 

On September 20, Sally Ann Hollis, former bookkeeper for Office and Professional Employees International Union Local 112, was indicted in federal court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania on one count of embezzlement of union funds of more than $20,000.  The Harrisburg-based union represents nurses and other employees at various Pennsylvania hospitals.  (OLMS, 10/9/06).

 

Ex-Treasurer in Michigan Pleads Guilty to Filing False Report

On September 20, Ann E. Smith, former secretary-treasurer of Machinists Local Lodge 2140, based in South Haven, Mich., pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to one count of filing a false report in order to conceal her embezzlement of union funds.  She received four months probation, and was ordered to make restitution to the union in the amount of $12,899.18.  (OLMS, 10/9/06). 

 

Milwaukee-Area Ex-President Pleads Guilty to Embezzlement

On September 21, Felix A. Robinson, former president of the Industrial Division of the Communications Workers of America, pleaded guilty in federal court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin to one count of embezzling $5,684.23 in union funds.  His union, the International Union of Electronic Workers, is an affiliate of the CWA.  (OLMS, 10/9/06). 

 

Former Texas Secretary Sentenced for Making False Entries

On September 12, Janice McKamey, former secretary-treasurer for Graphic Communications International Union Local 88-N, was sentenced in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas to three years probation, 200 hours of community service, and ordered to pay $2,680.94 in restitution.  She pled guilty in July to one count of making false entries in union records.  The GCIU since the start of 2005 has been affiliated with the Teamsters.  (OLMS, 10/9/06).
