On August 4, Duane DeJoie, former president of American Federation of Government Employees Local 1223 in Oakland, Calif., was charged in U.S. District Court of Northern California with embezzling union funds in the amount of $5,369. The local represents employees of Region 9 of the Social Security Administration’s Office of Hearings and Appeals. The charge follows an investigation by the Labor Department’s Office of Labor-Management Standards.
