On October 29, Curtis Iwatsubo, former secretary-treasurer of Glass, Molders, Pottery, Plastics and Allied Workers International Union Local 52, was sentenced in San Jose federal court to 10 months in prison for embezzling more than $48,000 in union funds and was ordered to pay $38,434 in restitution plus a $100 special assessment. Iwatsubo, now 36, in his guilty plea in May of this year admitted that during January-November 2005 he had used his union debit card to make more than 80 unauthorized ATM cash withdrawals totaling more than $47,000. He also admitted to using the card to making an unauthorized $800 payment to an American Express charge card and making false entries on union records to conceal the thefts. The local represents more than 200 workers at the Owens-Corning plant in Santa Clara. The guilty plea and sentencing follow a probe by the U.S. Labor Department’s Office of Labor-Management Standards.
