At least Stanley Barringer paid his union back early. Barringer, former vice president and acting treasurer of American Federation of Government Employees Local 3707, was sentenced on March 9 in U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts to one year probation and six months home confinement, and fined $2,000, for falsifying records to cover up his theft of $22,180 in union funds. He had pleaded guilty on November 18, ten days after being charged. AFGE Local 3707 represents civilian federal employees at Westover Joint Air Reserve Base in Chicopee, Massachusetts.
Federal prosecutors say that Barringer, 65, a resident of Springfield, during January 2002-February 2007 issued himself and cashed numerous unauthorized union checks for personal use. Moreover, during the period March 13, 2003-July 2, 2007 he entered false information in union financial reports to the U.S. Department of Labor. Shortly before pleading guilty, he repaid what he had embezzled. The guilty plea and sentencing follow a probe by the Labor Department’s Office of Labor-Management Standards.
