New Jersey Postal Workers Ex-President Sentenced

APWU logoOn June 14, Gary Weightman, former president of American Postal Workers Union Local 190, was sentenced in Newark federal court to five years probation, including a year of home confinement, for two counts of tax evasion. Weightman originally had been indicted in February 2006 along with local Secretary-Treasurer John McGovern for conspiring to embezzle a combined roughly $400,000 during April 2000-October 2002 from the Clifton, N.J. union. McGovern pleaded guilty last November to stealing anywhere from $120,000 to $200,000 and was sentenced in May to a 20-month sentence, three years probation and a restitution order to pay more than $780,000. Prosecutors dropped all remaining charges against Weightman after he pleaded guilty in December 2008 to the tax charges and agreed to cooperate with the IRS.
