On July 7, Leonard Leibowitz, former attorney for Independent Artists of America, a union representing dancers and stage hands at the American Ballet Theater in New York City, pleaded guilty in Manhattan federal court to filing a false financial report. All things considered, he got off easy. Leibowitz, as Union Corruption Update discussed at length in two previous articles, had been accused of diverting at least $350,000 in union funds to himself under the pretext of loan advances. He had been arrested for embezzlement in July 2009 and indicted this past March. The guilty plea follows an investigation by the U.S. Labor Department’s Office of Labor-Management Standards.
