On March 6, Kevin McKnight, former secretary-treasurer of United Transportation Union (UTU) Local 1390, was sentenced in U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey to four months of community confinement, four months of home confinement and three years of probation for embezzling approximately $68,000 in funds from the Laurence Harbor, N.J. (Middlesex County) union. He was charged and pleaded guilty in November 2011. UTU and the Sheet Metal Workers merged last year to form a new union called SMART. The actions follow a probe by the U.S. Labor Department’s Office of Labor-Management Standards.
