On April 9, Michael Martin, former president of American Postal Workers Union Local 3093, was sentenced in U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut to five years of probation, the first six months of which must be spent in home confinement with electronic monitoring, for acts of theft. He also will have to perform 200 hours of community service and pay restitution in the amount of $20,201. Martin had pleaded guilty in January to embezzling $11,320.61 worth of U.S. mail, plus another $8,880.78 in funds from the Norwalk-based union. The guilty plea and sentencing follow a joint investigation by the U.S. Labor Department’s Office of Labor-Management Standards and the U.S. Postal Service’s Office of Inspector General.
