On February 1, Lawrence Minas, former general chairman for United Transportation Union, General Committee of Adjustment 449, was sentenced in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois to six months of home detention, and was ordered to pay 10 percent of his monthly income in restitution, for embezzling $71,160 in funds from the union, formerly based in Palos Heights, Ill., and currently located in Munster, Ind. He had been charged in September of last year, pleading guilty several days later that month. The charge follows an investigation by the Labor Department’s Office of Labor-Management Standards.
