Ex-Teachers Union President in Philadelphia Sentenced

On February 11, James Young, former president of American Federation of Teachers Local 4973, was sentenced in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania to two years of probation and ordered to pay $5,450 in restitution and a $100 special assessment for embezzling $7,050 in funds from the Philadelphia union to cover gambling losses. He had pleaded guilty on October 23 after being charged that October 1. The actions follow an investigation by the U.S. Labor Department’s Office of Labor-Management Standards.
